Well done Sally
Junior National Archery Championships Lilleshall 2/3 July 2011

After 2 days of competition Sally Watson of Parkfield Archers has become the
National Junior Girls Longbow Champion. The competition at the
National Sports Centre at Lilleshall Shropshire, shot in extremely hot conditions,
saw Sally win the Ladies FITA, setting a new National record for the 50m section,
and winning the May Franks Rose Bowl on the Saturday, which was followed
by a second win in the Hereford round on the Sunday, winning the Skipper Cup
and being crowned National Champion.
She has also set 6 County records in the process.

2010
Daniel Menrad did it again
this year and beat his
County Record score for a
Bristol 4 round
scoring 1260.
This is the 2nd year in a
row he has the record,
shooting a Oneida Hawk
compound bow.
The national record for Junior champion under 12 is 1282 so maybe next year ....
Hi Folks,

My name is Daniel Menrad. I am from Germany and I lived in the UK for 3.5 years. I started with
archery together with my Dad shortly after I arrived in the UK. During my first lessons I shot with
a jelly bow and I shot pretty terribly! Thank god – I had the best coach in the universe!!
Andy Bensted told me all the tricks and taught me form and all the other stuff which is important
for archery (Andy’s buzz word is consistency). Most importantly – Andy kept me motivated.
After a while, I switched from the jelly stick to a beginner’s recurve bow. I liked to shoot this bow
however, after a while I became infected by the compound fever. I got a Mathews Genesis Pro
as a Christmas present! With this beloved bow I became an archery addict. I shot it at my first
Perris Archery field shoot and scored 1st place! I was so proud!
Andy was kind enough to become my coach and believe me – he told me a lot of important
lessons! Guess what? Consistency! Patience (very difficult)! Form (even more difficult)!
Finally, Andy’s magic mix payed off and I won several competitions. After I had become a
serious archer, my Dad sponsored me with an Oneida compound bow. With this bow, I
shot for Cambridgeshire. Loads of fun.
A year ago, I moved back to Germany. At the beginning I was pretty sad since I could not shoot
with Andy any more. Over time, Andy was not only “my coach”. He became one of my best friends.
I miss him a lot. Thank god somebody invented the internet! Andy still gives me a lot of good tips
how to improve my shooting (…consistency…).
Meanwhile, I am shooting for BSC Hohen-Neuendorf (close to Berlin). I won several competitions
and I am staff shooter for OK-Archery (try www.ok-archery.de if you are interested.
On the homepage you can also see a list of my achievements). Archery is still my favourite sport.
Shortly after I moved back to Germany, my Dad and I started with traditional archery.
According to Andy this is shooting with a bent stick! Usually, we shoot 3-D courses with
Christian Beck – a trad guru… This is great fun. Christian is a good guy who loves to fool around
with me. For him, archery is the best game in the universe. I will also post some photos from my
3 D-shoots. I hope you like my story and my photos!

That’s it for today!

Greetings from Daniel!

Shoot straight (…consistency pays…)!!

PS: If you need a great coach – call Andy Bensted. He is the best!

Civil Service Sports Council (CSSC) National
Outdoor Championships 2011
On the 8th of September 6 archers from Cambridgeshire, which represents
100% of our current CSAA regional membership, crossed the Thames
and headed south to the wilds of Kent to take part in the joint Civil Service
Sports Council (CSSC) / Civil Service Archery Association (CSAA)
Outdoor Championships.
After a nights rest this intrepid band gathered at the Old Dunstonians
Sports Ground in Beckenham, the home of the Crystal Palace Bowmen,
to shoot for the various individual and team trophies.
Despite being only a small number, the Cambridgeshire archers formed
the bulk of competitors from the CSSC Eastern Region and for the first
time in over 7 years fielded 1 area and 2 regional teams, missing out on
a second area team because we lacked an additional recurve archer.
For the majority this was their first or second time shooting this event,
but it proved to be a successful day with a trophy and medals coming
back in their baggage as detailed below:

1. E A Mahoney Arrows  Gents Recurve Joint Bronze Medal– Dave Long.
2. NICSSA Neptune Chalice Ladies Compound Bronze Medal –
                                    Helen Darby-Smythe
3. Regional Compound Team Trophy and Gold Medals – Eastern Region
(John Gorman, Ron Vernon & Helen Darby-Smythe).
4. Regional Recurve Team Bronze Medals – Eastern Region
(4 archers including Dave Long, Brian Cracknell, Steve Darby-Smythe).
5. Area Team 4th place – Cambridge
(Dave Long, John Gorman & Steve Darby-Smythe).

In addition Steve was also part of the MOD team who came 2nd in
Departmental team competition.

My thanks to all the Cambridgeshire archers who took part which gave
us the chance of fielding the various teams and especially to Brian who
shot his first ever competitive York round for us. If we did this well with
only 6 archers just think what we might of achieved if we had more
archers representing the Region and its areas.

If you wish to know more about archery in the CSSC or CSAA please

The CSSC and CSAA are both open to current and ex Civil Servants,
